Search Outlook

Last summer, Microsoft acquired a company that had a great search engine called Lookout. It was adapted to add-on to Outlook to allow you to search quickly for e-mail and any other files or attachments not only in Outlook but anywhere on your computer.

Once it is installed, you'll have a new toolbar for Lookout that looks like the one here. Simply type in what you are looking for and you'll get quick results.

It is much faster than using the search function that comes with Outlook and it is searching all of the different folders at the same time. This type of an add-on would be worth paying for but you won't have to. Download Lookout now.

I really like this feature not just to find a contact's record but to find anything associated to the Activities tab; it is much quicker. Try it and you'll love it. If you don't, it's easy to uninstall.

Backup Outlook

More and more people ask me how to backup Outlook, which tells me that there are probably hundreds times more users who also don't know how to do it either. The problem is that if they're using Outlook for their database and don't have a backup, there could be a serious loss of important information. In a previous newsletter, we reported about a Microsoft add-on that makes it easy to backup Outlook.

The .PST file contains all of the Outlook folders including e-mail, calendar, contacts, notes, and tasks. Your data might span both Internet, public and personal folders. Your archived data may be located in a separate folder. The Personal Folders Backup allows you to backup all of these folders.

Download the Microsoft Personal Folders Backup.

Outlook Spam Update

Microsoft has a new update with more current definitions for what should be considered junk e-mail. It probably won't solve all your problems but it will help.

Update your filter.

New Google Maps

gives you the ability to see satellite images of your favorite area in the United States. Not only can you view images of the area, but you can also zoom in or out as well as pan the images from left to right.

Unfortunately, only some areas, usually the major metropolises, support close ups from the satellite images. However, even if you can't zoom completely, you still get close enough to tell what from what, especially if you know the area in question.

Google commented on the Keyhole technology integration on their blog, which says:

Have you ever wished you could see what someplace looked like before you got there? A house? A hotel? A freeway exit? We thought you might find it useful, so we've incorporated Keyhole technology into Google Maps and Google Local. Now when you type an address into Google Maps, you can click the 'Satellite' link and see a view of the area. You can zoom, move the view by dragging, and even resize the window just like the normal 'Maps' view. Looking for a new apartment or house? Type in an address you're considering, get a view from the air and, with a quick local search, find out if you can walk to your favorite Saturday morning cup of coffee.

Like Google says, if you want to access satellite images of your area, be sure and click the link, which resides in the upper right-hand corner of the page.
